Overview

The Crime and Society Pathway at Career 6 prepares learners for university places Social work, counselling, criminology or related subjects as well as work in this area.  The crime and society pathway will help you use your skills, knowledge and experience to make a difference to the society that we live in. The combination of A levels in Psychology and Sociology with a Diploma in Criminology will create a programme of study suitable for further study,or work in the future.  All learners will take part in relevant work experience.

 

 

Details

This pathway will help you use your skills, knowledge and experience to make a difference to the society that we live in.  We will look at a range of social science perspectives and give you the change to explore sociological, psychological and political approaches to crime and behaviour. 

Learners will study the following subjects

A Level Psychology

You will study a whole host of exciting and interesting topics during your course, and look at a number of different approaches to psychology including cognitive, behavioural, physiological, social and areas such as relationships, memory, attachment, sleep, clinical psychology and mental health. You will also be given the opportunity for independent research in an area of psychology that interests you.   Many psychology students will go on to study for a degree in crime and society. Psychology also links well to any career where you need to understand how people think.

A Level Sociology

You will study a wide range of interesting and exciting sociology topics over the two years and will have the opportunity to develop a broad set of essential academic skills, including the ability to analyse and formulate clear, logical arguments with scope for extensive evaluation from a range of theoretical perspectives.   Sociology is a pathway to many careers and undergraduate programmes in teaching, journalism, criminology, nursing, social work, business, the legal profession and the armed forces; in fact any profession where you have to deal with people and consider their backgrounds.

Criminology Diploma

This interesting qualification will look at a number of topic areas including criminological theories, social policy, crime and much more, including crime and society and crime and punishment.   By studying this qualification students will gain the knowledge to progress and consider employment within some aspects of the criminal justice sector e.g. Probation Service or to university to study for a degree in the crime and society field.

 

How will it be delivered?

All courses will be delivered at Career 6 at the Grimsby Institute at Nuns Corner with many lessons taking place in the University Centre Grimsby.  

Entry requirements

We recommend that you have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. These must include a grade 5 in English Language and a grade 4 in Mathematics. It is advisable to be working at level 5 for Mathematics, due to some of the statistical work on the Psychology A Level.

Your next steps...

Progression from this course can lead to a University place to study Social Work, Counselling, Criminology or related subjects leading to work in the police, probation service or similar.
