Carpentry and joinery is a practical option and you will be working in the joinery workshops learning about working with wood and different woodworking joints.
Carpenters require an eye for detail, a sense of precision and a creative flair. If you want to train in this much needed trade our experienced tutors will guide you through the skills areas in our industry standard equipped workshops. On this course you will learn about construction technology, using woodwork joints, maintenance of tools and using power tools. Building on this you will learn about erecting structural carcasses, using circular saws and carrying out first and second fix operations. As one of our students you will have the opportunity to compete at Skillbuild WorldSkills competitions. Previous trips have included; Birmingham WorldSkills event, manufacturers, modular building visits and local building sites. The course includes the study of the following - Carry out Safe Working Practices, Communicating With Others, Construction Technology, Using Woodworking Joints, Maintenance of Tools, Use of Portable Power Tools.
How will it be delivered?
When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.
Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process.
The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.
Maths and English Language at grade 1 or above.
Your next steps...
Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.
