Art is passion, and here at the Grimsby Institute our specialist facilities will help you nurture and grow that passion into a career. You will build skills in graphics, painting and drawing, ceramics, fashion/textiles and look at the work of artists to help you to understand your own work and eventually specialise in different activities such as 2D and 3D, communication, sculpture, ceramics, graphics, fashion and textiles or printing.
Our Grimsby School of Art is packed full of specialist facilities including a photography studio, a print room for etching, silkscreen or relief printing and studios for ceramics, graphic design and fashion, you will truly be spoilt for ways to express your creativity. On top of all that there are regular guest speakers who share their knowledge and experience with you including practising artists, university lecturers with portfolio advice and representatives from the Arts Council ready to give you advice on gaining access to arts grants.Handpicked work experience placements will see you work as part of the Grimsby Institute outside commissions team painting murals and creating promotional artwork or organising, promoting and presenting in-house exhibitions. Previous trips have included; the V&A, Tate Modern, World Skills Event and the Harry Potter Studio Tour.The course will allow you to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in Art and Design. You will have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way following a programme of study that enables progression to both higher education and employment within Art and Design . You will experiment and develop your skills in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Fashion with the opportunity to specialise in one of these during the course.
When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.
Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process.
The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.
4 GCSEs grade 4 or above, or equivalent, including Maths and English Language and a portfolio of Artwork at interview.
Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.
