Studying for a vocational qualification is a practical option and you will learn from tutors who are industry specialists with great facilities in the professionally equipped  beauty therapy rooms in the Graduate Salon at the Nuns Corner Campus.


Learners will get to study in our realistic and well-equipped therapy rooms which will allow you to experience salon-life under the guidance of our highly-trained, inspirational tutors. A typical day of study could see you learning about manicures and nail art, skin treatments and creating individual looks. The range of skills you will cover throughout your journey include:

- Waxing services: types of equipment and products, different services and how to carry these out.

- The hair growth cycle, factors that affect growth and the function and structure of skin and hair.

- Hand and nail treatments: the techniques, tools and equipment used within hand and nail treatments, including the anatomy and physiology of hands, lower arms, nails and skin.

- Makeup application: techniques, tools and equipment used to create different looks.

- Basic massage treatments: anatomy and physiology of the body and its systems and the benefits of massage techniques.

You will get to develop important industry skills and values such as following codes of practice and ethics, quality assurance systems, time management principles, self-management principles and the importance of continuing professional development, equality and diversity. You will also get to experience expert talks from industry professionals at the Institute, and have the chance to go on trips to inspire creativity and enhance your work. Previous trips have included the Professional Hair and Beauty Show, the Clothes Show Live and trips to Lancôme. You will learn about working in the beauty industry as well as manicure and pedicure, face painting, nail art, make up, skin care, hand care and team working skills.

How will it be delivered?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions.  There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these. 

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process.  As a guide you might be expected to achieve GCSEs grade 1-2 or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby such as Special Effects Make up and Prosthetics. 

Career paths open can include: Beauty Therapist, Salon Owner, Spa Manager or Make Up Artist.
